Baby Hat!

I am terrible with children. I have no idea how to talk to them, or what they like to do, eat or wear. I also have no concept of children sizes. Case in point: I decided to make my two year old cousin a hat, and had to re-make it twice before it was the right size. The first one was way too small (as Amaya so kindly said: "Mari.. that hat is for an infant. A new-born infant. No way that will fit a two year old child). Luckily the second time proved to be the charm. Here is my adorable cousin Alma rocking her sweet new hat:

Yes, I know they are boy colors. The yarn was baby yarn I bought when my friend had a baby boy over three years ago. Did I mention I am a procrastinator?

First Project Made With Handspun!

Remember the original point of this blog? No? Me neither. I'm pretty sure it was to chronicle my journey into spinning yarn, but that obviously got thrown by the wayside. I did actually spin some yarn once upon a time, and over the weekend I finally turned it into something!

The main reason I hadn't done anything with this particular yarn was because there wasn't enough yardage to make anything significant. Finally I decided to make a miniature version of an infinity scarf...but it turned out more like a cowl.
It's kind of hard to figure out how to wear it, since it's a little too long to be a cowl and a little too short to be an infinity scarf... but I like it anyway. Mainly because there are a lot of Mari-hours put in that darn thing.
It looks pretty cute with a pin holding it into place!! I think it would look nice under a puffy winter coat, so I'm hoping Amaya will adopt it and take it back home to NYC when she comes to visit this week.

I Might Have Had Some Time on My Hands....

...and I might have color-coordinated my bookshelf. And I might have spent at least 15 minutes standing there admiring it.

Cork Board!

I finished my cork board this weekend thanks to a kind cork donation from my neighbor.
It's so pretty that I don't actually want to use it as a bulletin board.

A Hat Goes to a Show

On Friday the girls and I went to see my favorite singer, Sean Hayes. It was a fantastic show, and to make it even better Danu wore a hat I made her.
Here it is in all its fuzzy glory.
And here's my pathetic attempt at getting both the hat and Sean Hayes in the same shot. I can't wait until he comes out with his new album and comes back to Santa Cruz!

I thought I was a wino, but....

My friends and I drink a lot of wine. I mean, not enough to be worried about us (although a new study links red wine to increased metabolism and thus lower obesity rates so maybe we should drink more), but if there is a group of us together there is probably a bottle of wine nearby. So when I started collecting wine corks a while back to make a cork board, I thought it was going to be no problem.
I'd been on a frame-quest for several months, browsing thrift stores, flea markets and antique stores looking for the right one. I finally found one over the weekend at my neighborhood Goodwill, but to my horror I realized I didn't have enough corks!
There are 69 wine corks there, plus 6 champagne corks. I have a few extra champagne corks, but I wanted them to just line the bottom... so it looks like we need to start drinking more wine. I only need 9 more corks... with the holidays coming up I don't think that will be a problem!

I also have a ton of beer caps that I've been saving, but I'm not sure what to do with them quite yet. Anyone have any ideas?
